The other day I saw this interesting post on the Inventor newsgroup. The discussion was about what would be the best method to create a hole in a direction that is not perpendicular to the face it starts from.
Here is an example of such a hole that I would like to focus on.
The discussion brought two solutions to light and both have their merits. I will illustrate each method with a small video. Each method uses the On Point option in the hole command (for the simple reason that this option offers direction control).
Method 1: create a On Point hole and clean up unwanted face slivers with the Delete Face command
Method 2: create a On Point hole on a fixed workpoint, positioned via its triad on a safe distance outside the part to avoid unwanted faces.
I thought both methods were very clever use of Inventor commands that I would not immediately expect to be used in the hole context. Kudos to both authors.
