Lately I have seen a couple of posts around this pop up on the Autodesk newsgroups.
So I wanted to make it clear that there is currently no official support in the Inventor and Vault products for Office 2010. The highest version of Office supported is Office 2007.
Support for Office 2010 will be investigated for future releases.
Keep also in mind that when you export BOM data in the much older Excel 95 format, that this format can no longer be read by Excel 2010 (this is a Microsoft decision, not an Autodesk decision).
A safer bet is to use newer formats like Excel 2003 instead of Excel 95.
You can of course also mitigate some of the risk by using all purpose formats like CSV when exporting BOM data.
On the same topic, I would also like to refer to the Inventor system requirements that somewhere in the middle of the article clearly state support for "Microsoft® Excel 2003 through 2007 for iComponents, thread customization, and spreadsheet-driven designs". With iComponents is meant iParts and iAssemblies.
Some people like to read the system requirements in an optimistic manner and stretch them a bit but as you see, Excel 2010 is not explicitly mentioned in the requirements, meaning it is off limits.
Off my soapbox.
