Autodesk has received several crash reports in the past couple of months from users of Inventor, AutoCAD, and AutoCAD-based products caused by an incomplete Microsoft Office XP product that occurs after installing a Microsoft Office XP security patch installation.
We have strong evidence that the Microsoft security patch issued on October 14, 2008 is one of the patches that causes the problem.
You can find more information about this security patch at,
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958686.
The crash happens during startup of Inventor in the “mso” module: “C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\office10\mso.dll"
You can resolve this issue by starting one of the Microsoft Office applications (for example, Excel) at least once after the installation of the Microsoft security patch and before attempting to run any Autodesk product.

Funny - had this error 4 Weeks ago on 4 machines. I found this information about the patch problem in the Adsk knowledge Base. The advice "You can resolve this issue by starting one of the Microsoft Office ..." did not solve the problem because there was only office 2007 installed on the machines. So there was no way to start an office xp module.
A look into system control/Installed software brought me to the point - Office 2007 was installed as an update without removing all of the office xp stuff. Finally Uninstalling all Office xp entries fixed the problem.
